Orics
These rare beings can heal wounds, speak though mental telepathy, read minds,
and rewrite their very DNA to change their physical form.
Orics are characterized by their blue eyes, which do not occur in any of the Ectroian dominant races in any other circumstance.
Their history is certainly a colorful one.

Early Orics
The history of Orics stretches back to ancient times. Nomadic Troodon herds, Kenashi prides, and Hecklefang packs depicted blue-eyed individuals exhibiting strange abilities in many of their cave paintings and on pottery, suggesting that the genetic variant goes all the way back before civilization. Sometimes these individuals were revered as noble leaders, heroes, and saviors. Other times, their kind grew fearful of their abilities and exiled them. But as a whole, no one seemed to truly understand these blue-eyed individuals. The "Orics" themselves most likely did not understand their abilities, either. No others could heal wounds at a single touch, communicate without speaking, or change their physical appearance as they could.
The first time anyone seriously studied this phenomenon was hundreds of years before Book One took place. A thirteen-year-old male Troodon, Orpa Orick III, awoke one morning and realized that his brown eyes were rapidly turning blue. He, like many of his kind, had heard the legends of these special ones with blue eyes, but no one ever took the legends seriously, as there hadn't been a Troodon with this trait for generations. After asking the village elders to tell him the legends again, Orpa realized he had been showing all the signs of being such an individual since he was very young—he healed much faster than others, was a very deep thinker, felt a very deep connection with all forms of life, and sometimes others would know what he was thinking without him having to speak. Determined to understand who and what he really was, Orpa Orick III dedicated his free time to strengthening and studying his abilities. Over the years, he wrote down his observations and discoveries in multiple journals.
These same journals were eventually published and reprinted by one of the Emperors of Troodainia, and combined with the writings of a Kenashi who also studied the phenomenon. While Orpa delved into the physical and emotional aspects of his identity, the Kenashi scholar, Kuro Zuoija, focused on the scientific and philosophic aspects. Kuro deemed himself and fellow Orics a product of what he called Oculus azulus sundrome (literally "blue eye syndrome"), a condition that causes the change of iris color. After reading Orpa's work, Kuro also began calling it "Oric syndrome," after Orpa's surname.
The general population began calling these blue-eyed ones "Orics" after it was noticed that this syndrome seemed to be hereditary--Orpa's grandson, and great-great-granddaughter both shared his abilities. They were all of the Orick bloodline, and thus the most famous of all the other blue-eyed ones in history.

Modern Orics
Since the years of Orpa Orick III and Kuro Zouija, many scholars and scientists have studied Orics. In more recent times, Amber's uncle, Vinny Flanagan, spent years studying Charlie Trenton after meeting him in Book Two. Vinny's research extended the knowledge of Orics by leaps and bounds that have even exceeded the advances made by Orpa and Kuro. Vinny discovered that when in any one form, an Oric's DNA is completely identical to that of a non-Oric of the same species, making it almost impossible to use DNA testing to distinguish that Charlie wasn't born a human. In addition, he discovered that the brain activity of an Oric spikes tremendously when using his or her telepathic abilities, and the person that receives the Oric's thoughts shares the same spike in brain activity. It was also determined by Vinny that the "Oric syndrome" is indeed a genetic trait that can be passed down through the generations, but can also arise randomly through an extremely rare genetic mutation. However, it was Charlie that finally solved the issue of changing forms while retaining clothing, and why that never seemed to work when certain types of clothes were involved. Based on Vinny's cellular research, Charlie deducted that only certain types of material could be retained and re-created by an Oric--specifically, only clothes made with organic materials and dyes (wool, cotton, plant-based dyes, no metal or man-made fibers like polyester).
Several of the main characters in the WOT series are Orics. Charlie Trenton is the most notable Oric, as Book One follows the discovery and development of his Orichood. Charlie's strong point seems to be telepathy, since he eventually learns to convey specific sounds, voices, and even pictures into others' minds along with his own thoughts, which sets a new record among his kind. Emperor Aregyle Amani, successor and nephew of Heckata Ukaidi, is also an Oric. His strong point seems to be form changing. Aregyle can change from elephant form to mouse form or vice versa in as little as five seconds, which also sets a new record. Ambretta "Amber" Jackson has been suspected to be an Oric by the readers, what with her blue eyes and possible telepathic abilities. Ashley Briarwolf says that the answer to this suspicion will be answered once and for all in Book Two, as Orics always discover their abilities by the time they turn thirteen.
